Student Chapter of the American Dental Hygienists' Association  

Dental Hygiene students are welcome and encouraged to attend and participate
in the monthly component meetings held by the NWVDHA. Please contact a member if you are interested in carpooling to the meetings generally held in Woodstock, VA on the 3rd Thurs at 6:30pm.

NWVDHA  Student Scholarship

NWVDHA would like to congratulate the following students who were awarded 2009 Scholarships:

                                            Anne Garrett
                                            Sally Gillespy
                                            Rachel Lee
                                            Janet Shanholtzer

This scholarship was established in 2001 by the Northwest component of the Virginia Dental Hygienists’ Association. The Virginia Dental Hygienists’ Association is a constituent of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association.

This award will be presented in the fall semester to a second year dental hygiene student(s) at Lord Fairfax Community College distance site of the Virginia Western Community College. The award will be for $750 and is to be used for tuition, books and other related financial obligations. As many as three (3) students may qualify for a $250 portion of the total.

To be eligible for this award, the applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Write an essay of 250-400 words explaining “How will you, as a professional, support your career as a Dental Hygienist?”

  • Maintain a cumulative 3.0 grade point average.

  • Write a brief summary of your financial needs that warrant this award.

  • Be a second year dental hygiene student enrolled in the VWCC-LFCC Joint Venture Dental Hygiene Program.

  • Hold a current Student Membership with the American Dental Hygienists’ Association.

LFCC Dental Hygiene Students attend the American Dental Hygienists' Association Annual Session.  Through generous funding the students and faculty were able to attend the national dental hygiene meeting that was held in June 2009 in Washington DC

Janet Shanholtzer was chosen to attend the Virginia Dental Hygienists Association Annual Session as a student delegate.  Janet participated in the House of Delegates along with six students from other DH programs across the commonwealth as well many other activities at the meeting.

Welcome to the 2010 VWCC-LFCC Joint Venture Dental Hygiene Class
Student Orientation was held in Aug 2008 to welcome the students to the Lord Fairfax Campus.  The orientation was followed by a Mentor/Student Pot Luck Dinner.  Students received a goody bag provided by the local component.

ABBY BISCHOFF :  THE VIRGINIA DENTAL HYGIENISTS ASSOCIATION SPONSORS AN ANNUAL STUDENT AWARD.  THIS AWARD IS BASED ON SCHOLASTIC ABILITY, CLINICAL PROFICIENCY, AND PROFESSIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS.  THE WINNER RECEIVES A FULL YEAR OF ADHA MEMBERSHIP DUES INCLUDING ALL NATIONAL, STATE, AND LOCAL FEES.  THE NAME AND YEAR OF GRADUATION WILL BE ENGRAVED ON A PLAQUE AT EACH INDIVIDUAL SCHOOL. 

JILL CHERRY-ENGLAND : THE ALICE B. WILLIAMS AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN PATIENT EDUCATION .  ALICE B. WILLIAMS IS THE FOUNDER OF THE DH PROGRAM AT VWCC.  SHE WAS A WONDERFUL PROFESSIONAL WHO CONTINUALLY GAVE TO DH THROUGHOUT HER CAREER.  ALICE EXCELLED IN PREVENTION AND PATIENT EDUCATION. 

JESSICA PARSONS :  THE GOLDEN SCALER AWARD IS TO RECOGNIZE A STUDENT FOR OUTSTANDING CLINICAL COMPETENCE.  A STUDENT WHO UNDERSTANDS PROPER INSTRUMENTATION AND DEMONSTRATES AN EXCELLENCE USING THESE SKILLS AT CHAIR SIDE.  THE AWARD RECIPIENT RECEIVES A GOLDEN SCALER FOR DISPLAY AT THEIR WORK SETTING. 

MEGAN MURPHY : COLGATE ORAL PHARMACEUTICALS RECOGNIZES STAR DENTAL HYGIENE STUDENTS.  THE COLGATE STAR IS AWARDED TO THE GRADUATING DENTAL HYGIENE STUDENT WHO DEMONSTRATES TRUE DEDICATION TO THE DENTAL HYGIENE PROFESSION, EXHIBITS COMPASSION IN PATIENT CARE, DISPLAYS ENTHUSIASM FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND ENJOYS THE ROLE OF DENTAL HYGIENIST.

MEGAN MURPHY :  The Sigma Phi Alpha Honor Society Award is presented to a graduating dental hygiene student in recognition of outstanding scholarship, moral character, and the potential for future growth and attainment.  SIGMA PHI ALPHA National Dental Hygiene Honor Society was established to recognize and honor excellence in scholarship, service, and character among graduating dental hygiene students.
